Aracibo

Aracibo

In 2020 I was invited to be a part of the digital residency programme Vital Capacities.

Vital Capacities afforded me the space and time for a period of experimentation, which resulted in a body of new work that included comics, sculpture and photography, collectively entitled Aracibo.

In 2021, based on this project, I received an Arts Council England career development award that allowed me to renew and explore dormant animation skills.

You can see more of what I made as well as the work of other artists at the Vital Capacities website:

Vital Capacities

Vital Capacities is an accessible, purpose-built digital residency space that supports artists’ practice while engaging audiences with their work. The aims of Vital Capacities are to:

  • provide an accessible space for artists and audiences who may be limited by resources or physical barriers from participating;

  • support artists to make new work and to engage with audiences (through exhibition, workshops, events);

  • produce a platform that reflects the opportunities provided by a physical residency – skills sharing, new contacts, critical development, space;

  • and to offer an exhibition platform for artists’ work in the UK and internationally.

This is Aracibo, my plastic avatar. Aracibo is based on the pixelated image of the human figure sent, encoded in the Arecibo Message in 1974, from the Arecibo Space Telescope.

This video documents some of the experimental work Daniel produced in his sketchbook during the residency.
