Edward Street Quarter:

Community engagement project

Edward Street Quarter: community engagement project

In summer 2021 I was commissioned (with the artist Hannah Chater) to design and deliver a community engagement project for the new Edward Street Quarter development in central Brighton. We ran a series of creative workshops with residents who live in the vicinity to build a portrait of the neighbourhood.

The work produced was then shared with artist Bruce Williams and inspired his new public artwork for the site (still in development). The themes of the workshops and artwork were drawn from the community’s history of fishing and ideas of home.

We were subsequently invited to share this project as part of the Phoenix Gallery’s annual Community Takeover exhibition, titled ‘Journeys’. We exhibited participant’s drawings of stars and constellations, a neighbourhood star map and examples of Bruce’s design work.
